Tracking Children’s Progress
Ensuring every child is happy, supported, and developing in the best possible way.
Why do we track children’s progress in nursery?
Tracking your child’s progress helps us make sure they are happy, supported and developing in the best possible way, in line with the EYFS. The EYFS requires early years settings to understand where each child is in their development, so we can support them as individuals — not compare them to others.
What does “tracking progress” mean?
Tracking progress simply means that we:
- Observe your child as they play and learn
- Notice what they enjoy, what they can do, and what they are working towards
- Record these observations over time
This is done naturally through everyday play — not tests or formal assessments.
Why is this important?
Understand the Individual
Every child develops at their own pace and is Unique.
Support Learning through Play
We plan activities that gently stretch and challenge them.
Support Wellbeing
When children feel successful, their confidence grows.
Identify Support Early
Tracking helps us spot concerns early so support can be put in place.
Partnership with Parents
Celebrate achievements together and support learning at home.
How this links to the EYFS
The EYFS is clear that:
- Children learn best through play and positive relationships
- Ongoing observation helps practitioners provide responsive, child-centred care
- Assessment should be light-touch, meaningful, and focused on supporting development — not labelling children
Tracking progress ensures we are meeting these expectations while keeping your child’s experience positive and enjoyable.
Statutory Requirements & Reports
Baseline Summary Report
We are required to understand where your child is at, at the start of their Learning Journey. This report will be collated and shared with you within the first two weeks, gathered through your input and observation.
2 Year Check
A two Year Progress Check will be done between the ages of 24 Months and 36 Months. This runs alongside the NHS Health Visitor Review for integrated support.
Transition Report
Produced and shared by your child’s Key Person before your child transitions from one room to another (Babies to Toddlers, Toddlers to Preschool). This is shared with your child’s new room so they have a full understanding of your child’s development.
School Transition Report
Shared with your child’s Primary School when they move to ‘Big School’. It focuses on academic, social and emotional development and ensures a smooth move. This report will be shared with you before it is sent to school.
